- Memory Management
Firstly, it refers to the management of primary memory. Secondly, it keeps track of how much memory has been used and by whom. In other words, it has to decide which process needs memory space and how much.
- Processor Management
In multiprogramming environment, the OS decides which process gets the processor when and for how much time. So, this function is process scheduling.
- Device Management
An operating system manages device communications through their respective drivers.
- File Management
A file system is normally organized into directories for easy navigation and usage.
- Security
Privacy is also provided by the Operating system by means of passwords. Therefore, unauthorized applications can’t access programs or data.

- Batch Operating System
Some computer processes are very lengthy and time-consuming. So, a job with a similar type of needs batched together to speed the same process and run as a group.
2. Multi-Tasking/Time-sharing Operating systems
This enables people located at a different terminal to use a single computer system at the same time.
3. Real time Operating systems
It meant applications to fix the deadlines.
4. Distributed Operating System
It manages a group of different computers and makes appear to be a single computer.
5. Network Operating System
Computers running in different operating systems can participate in a common network.
Where is the operating system stored on a computer?
The hard drive (hard disk) is the main storage device in your computer.
In most of the computers, the operating system is stored on the primary hard drive inside the computer.
Moreover, computers operating systems can also be installed and loaded from an external hard drive.
In addition, early computer operating systems used multiple floppy diskettes to install an operating system.
