Mobile Ad Hoc Network also known as wireless ad hoc network is a network design without any formal structure. Moreover, nodes connecting to the network make configuration dynamic without following pre define top down architecture.
Additionally configuration of nodes takes place in a free and autonomous manner.
Characteristics of Mobile Ad Hoc Network
Let us look at some of its characteristics.
- Dynamic Network Topologies
- Low capacity specifications
- Direct Node for communication
- Autonomous behaviour
Firstly, as there is no pre define top down architecture, nodes connect to the structure of topology dynamically. Hence, the shape of the network is constantly changing according to the requirements.
Secondly, MANET has low capacity specifications which have small memory size, storage and lower CPU speed.
Thirdly, nodes can communicate directly with each other. If they are not communicating, nearby nodes act as routers to send the data packets to destination. Also, each node has a wireless interface for this communication.
Also each node can act as a router as well as a host which depicts its autonomous behaviour.
Security Issues with Mobile Ad Hoc Network
Since there is dynamic network topologies which constantly changes, it is highly dangerous and susceptible to attacks. Moreover, there are some issues related to availability, confidentiality of the system.
It may also result in eavesdropping or denial of service attacks. MANETs are prone to both internal as well as external attacks.
Internal Attacks
Internal attacks target the nodes directly. Also it can target the network interface links which gives seamless transmission. Moreover, the routing tables which are in connection with direct node can also be the prime target.
A copy of the routing table is hosted by the node which make it difficult to detect such type of attack. There can be incorrect routing information which may be broadcasted around the network from corrupt nodes.
External Attacks
External attacks basically targets the performance of the network. This may include network congestion. Also Denial of Service (DOS) attack and corrupt information being routed is possible in such attacks.
Pros and Cons of MANET
Pros:
- Separation and distance from central network administration.
- Each node can perform multiple functions such as act like router.
- Self configuration and less human intervention.
Cons:
- More prone to attacks including external and internal.
- Lacks authorization facilities.
- Limited resources due to interference conditions.
